Finding a roommate that you can get along with may be the most difficult decision you will ever make as a renter. At first, everybody is nice and it seems like you can get along with anyone. But after living together in close quarters for awhile, it's easy to get on each other's nerves. Luckily, there are some things you can do to find a roommate that will be someone you can end up being best friends with.
1. Don't share a bedroom. One of the reasons that roommates so often annoy each other is because they are together all the time. This is especially true if two roommates share the same bedroom. Everybody needs their own space where they can just go to get away from everything and everyone that is bothering them. As such, you should not have more roommates than you have bedrooms so each person has a place to go when they want to be alone for awhile.
2. Interview several possibilities. A roommate is someone that you are likely going to see every day for several months or even years. You want to be sure your lifestyle is compatible with their lifestyle so you will both be happy. Create a questionnaire for each interviewee to answer. Ask them the questions so you can get an honest and quick response from them. Include on that questionnaire some of the things that are important to you, such as cleanliness, quiet time after a certain time of night and anything else that you can think of.
3. Discuss your expectations of each other. Some roommates are simply looking for someone to help share the cost of the rent and utilities. Others might be looking for more of a friendship from their roommate. Understanding what each of you wants and choosing a roommate with similar expectations will help curb arguments and awkwardness after they move in with you.
4. Know about their job situation. Does your potential roommate have a steady job or do they often go from job to job? If they don't have a steady income, it could cause problems between the two of you when it comes time to pay the rent and other bills.
